PLATEAU: FEAR OF SPEAKER’S IMPEACHMENT LOOMS, AS LAWMAKERS SPLIT ALONG PARTY LINES OVER LGCs MANGEMENT COMMITTEE’ TENURE

By: Valentine Adese

Fear that plans would soon commence towards the impeachment of the Plateau State House of Assembly Speaker,  Rt. Hon. Peter Azi, has eclipsed the political air today in Plateau State, as lawmakers split in opinion along party lines, over the issue of the extension of the tenure of Local Government Management Committee in the 17 Local Government Councils of the state.

You would recall that the state Governor, Simon Lalong in a communication read on the floor of the House, has requested for a further extension of the tenure of the Management Committees, pending when the state would have funds to conduct the much awaited Local Government Councils’ election.

Before now, the House had unanimously agreed that the Management Committees would only continue to enjoy two months extension after expiration of their tenure, in order to create room for effective checks by the Legislators in their oversight functions.

More also, the House is in receipt of several petitions on the present Chairmen, over poor performances and other allegations.

Today, while the argument on the motion was on the floor and sensing that the Speaker may rule in favour of a 6months extension for the Management Committees, in line with the request of the Governor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the House walked out of the chambers in protest.

More also, the PDP lawmakers expressed their observation that some members of the APC lawmakers in the House would have voted in line with the PDP, in rejecting the extension if, the Speaker, Hon. Azi had put in the question.

“So, you see, he refused to put it as a question to get the votes. The Speaker knows that the position he was backing was not popular among members and the good people of Plateau state hence, we protested and walked out”, stated a member who does not want his name on print.

However, reacting to the development, Political observers in the state have opined that the Speaker risks impeachment.

“You should know that in Plateau State, it takes prayers for a Speaker in the State House of Assembly to state more than two (2) years in office. This episode has set the stage for his removal from that office. Just watch and see!” They stated
