The Nigeria Minister of Information and Culture, Hon. Lai Mohammed has stated that the ongoing Hate Speeches and Fake News making headlines in the country, are deliberately planned projects to make the country ungovernable.
The Minister who made this submission on Friday at the Opening of the Extra-Ordinary Meeting of the National Council On Information in Jos, said, “HATE SPEECHES , FAKE NEWS and the DISINFORMATION campaign is a multi-million naira project intended to discredit the government, destabilize the polity and make the country ungovernable”.
Mr. Lai however, warned that the exploitation of hate speeches , fake news and disinformation is a dangerous trend that is capable of threatening the very foundation of the nation’s unity.
Adding his voice to the issue and giving reasons why the trending fake news habit should be checked, the Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Professor Sonny Tyoden said, “effective communication is key in preserving and defending Nigeria from the perceived threats of disinformation”.
Earlier, while welcoming members of the Council, the Plateau State, the Plateau State Commissioner of Information, Hon. Mohammed Nazif, posited that information managers must rise to position the media (Government and Private) for national building.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Information, Hassan Daiyae, while explaining the essence of the gathering and the choice of the theme, reemphasized that the theme of the Council meeting was deliberately chosen to address Nigeria's current challenges on Information and how it is affecting it unity.
