The hopes of the people at the Local Government level in Plateau state for a democratic government within the next few months has been dashed, as the current appointed Transition Committee in the 17 Local government Councils’ tenures have been extended by another two months.According to findings by REALITY, The Plateau State House of Assembly approved the extension of the tenure of its Local Government Transition Management by another two months, owing to the fact that there is nothing before them suggesting that the State’s Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) is ready or prepared for the anticipated election.
Findings shows that the anticipated TimeTable for LGC elections is yet to come from PLASIEC.
The extension came also, owing to the fact that the House would be proceeding on vacation and the monthly renewal of the TIC tenure may not be feasible since the Honourable Members of the House would be observing the Sallah holidays within the period.
The Motion to extend the tenure of the TIC came as a result of the Motion on Notice presented on the floor of the House by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Henry Yunkwap.
According to Hon. Yunkwap, who is representing Shendam State Constituency in the State Assembly, “in order not to create a vacancy at the local government councils in the state there was need for the extension of the tenure of the management committee.”
While recalling the history of the present management committee in the state, the lawmaker said that the House had approved their list on 28th of July for a renewable one month tenure.
Though the House has approved the two months, the decision of the House did not go down well with the minority members of the House.
Contributing, the minority leader and member representing Riyom constituency, Hon. Dem Daniel objected the two months tenure extension arguing that they should maintain the one month extension agreed by the House when the state Governor Simon Bako Lalong presented the list to the House.
The Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Plateau State, has however started kicking against the extension on behalf of the opposition in the state.
According to the Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Nanyah Daman, this All Progressives Congress (APC) step of extending the tenure of the TIC is a rip off on the good nature of the masses.
Details on their reaction coming soon!
