FIRST ANNIVERSARY: PLATEAU STATE GENDER COMMISSION SPEAKS TOUGH, AS GYEL COMMUNITY, TRADITIONAL RULERS, OTHERS SUPPORT ITS MANDATE

Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission has began to talk tough to Law violators as it celebrates its One Year Anniversary amidst successes.

The Commission has also began to organized Community Outreach Programs in order to create more awareness of the State’s Law in various communities, starting with Gyel Community in Jos-South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state toady, as it relates to the Mandate of the Commission to “Promote gender equality, equity, and the rights of women, children, and other vulnerable groups in Plateau State”.

THE COMMISSION IN GYEL

The Community Outreach program organized in Gyel Community Hall, saw leaders of Faith, Traditional Leaders, Youth Associations, Women Leaders and Christian Women Leaders in attendance.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Barr. Olivia Dazyam, who took her time to breakdown the State’s Law, went further to inform the gathering that the Commission’s Mandate is to prosecute offenders and get conviction. She warned the community and those around that the Commission is not structured to forgive and that if there would be any forgiveness of perpetrators it would only come after conviction.

 Speaking on behalf of the Traditional Rulers in the gathering, the Gwom Rai of Jos-South, Da. Dr. Nga Nangyang, who also doubles as the Chairman of Jos-South Traditional Council, urged everybody in the gathering to go home and reflect on the issues raised by the Chairperson, especially on the vices she made references to within the community and decide for themselves, whether it would be wise to allow the sad developments to continue or help the Commission by doing things that would bring good name and image to the community and the state at large.

The Gwom Rai, also urged them to reflect on what is making the state and its people to fail in the area of Commerce and Industry.

Others who gave goodwill messages in the occasion, were, Alexander Anlong, a Director with the Ministry of Women Affairs, Director of Social Services from Jos-South Local Government Council, Da. Silas Pwajok, President of Berom Development Association, among others.   

They all spoke and gave reasons why the Commission must be supported, while thanking the State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang for the initiative of establishing the Commission.
