PLATEAU: JOS-SOUTH CAHIRMAN, HON. SILAS PATRICK DUNG, PROMISES TO SUPPORT AND WORK WITH PLATEAU STATE GENDER COMMISSION

The Chairman of Jos-South Local Government Council of Plateau State, Hon. Silas Patrick Dung has promised to support, promote and work with the State’s Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission.

The Chairman made this promise today, during a courtesy call by the Commission led by its Chairperson, Barr. Olivia Dazyam at his office.

The Chairman, while receiving the Commission in his office, disclosed that he has always been in the front line with regards to gender issues and that he was directly involved in the recent rescue of most Plateau State girls that were trafficked out of the state to Abuja, Ghana and many other Countries.

He said, “I take social services very personal and that is why I take the Department of Social Services of the Local Government (LG) a priority. I always go to the department whenever I am around in the office to see that things are going well there.

 The Chairman who was full of praises for the State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang for the establishing the Gender Commission, urged the staff and members of the Commission to uphold its mandate according to the provisions of the Law that established it.

He also urged the Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs. Olivia Dazyam, to always reach out to enable the Council know where their support would be needed.

 Earlier, the Chairman of the Commission, Barr. Olivia, while informing the LGC Chairman of the reasons for the courtesy call, told the Chairman that the vices in the Local Government as it relates to Gender Violence  against Girls and Women is now at a worrisome state.

She said, “The rate at which the trafficking of our young girls out and taking them to other states for House Girl’s job has reached an alarming state. Secondly, the level at which youthful  people in Gyel Community in your local government are involved in the recent trafficking of girls to Ghana and other countries is one among many issues why the Commission is here today to engage key stakeholders, Traditional Rulers and youths in Gyel.

“We are therefore in your office to make you know of what we are doing in your Local Government as a Commission. We are here to create awareness of the Plateau State Law that has been put in place to control these vices”.  

It is of note that the Commission is organizing a Community Outreach in Gyel Community in Jos-South Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, as part of activities to mark the Commission’s One Year Anniversary.
