In a few days, the Legitimate Members of the Plateau State House of Assembly would resume their duties in the House.
They are expected to take Oaths of Office to make Laws for the benefit of the citizens of Plateau State and also run oversight functions to better the lots of the citizens, the state institutions, the Economy, and the Welfare of the people.
Principally, it would be expected that before they start sitting formally, they would have chosen principal leaders amongst themselves.
However, before the new Members would be the issue of the suspended 17 Local Government Council (LGC) Chairmen in the state, who were booted out of office with an unfulfilled aim of investigating allegations of financial impropriety against them.
Secondly, they would be tied to the case of the Chairmen in Suit No: PLD/J257/2023 before the Plateau State High Court wherein the Chairmen and their co-suspended Councilors are challenging their suspension from office by Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Esq) and the State Attorney-General.
Now that the Senate has frowned at the handling of the Affairs of LGC by “Non-elected Chairmen”, the Members are expected to address the issues of the 6-month Transition Committee in the 17 LGCs and work according to Law and plethora of judgments in this regard.
While there are rumours of plans to truncate the resumption of these Legitimate Lawmakers who would soon be issued their Certificate of Return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as ordered by the Court of Appeal, it is expected that the Security Operatives in the state would have already prepared to handle and attempt to disturb the already established peace in the state.
It is also proper, that the financial dealings of these TICs in the 17 LGCs are investigated, since those who have handled their affairs in the past 6 months were not legitimate, according to the Constitution (1999 as amended) provisions.
