PDP/ALEX LADAN FOUNDATION’S SYMPOSIUM ON VISIONARY AND PURPOSEFUL LEADERSHIP, A SUCCESS IN PLATEAU STATE--INVITEES

The Symposium organized by the Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Alex Ladan Foundation has been adjudged as successful by participants and invitees, who attended the occasion.

The occasion, which is centered on look at how Purposeful and Visionary Leadership can be reestablished in Plateau State and the country at large had Four (4) basic objectives and was attended by “Who is Who” in the PDP, among others.

Key among the attendees were, Sen. Jonah Jang, Sir Fidelis Tapgun, Hon. D. T. Sango, Hon. Timothy Golu, Hon. Emmanuel Go’ar, among other distinguished members of the PDP in the state, alongside members of the Caretaker Committee of the party, led by Sen. Tunde Ogbeha, as Chief Host.

In their welcome addresses, the President of Alex Ladan Foundation, Mr. Alex Ladan, and the Chairman of the PDP’s Caretaker Committee, Sen. Ogbeha, told the invitees that the Symposium is aimed at exposing who, how and why, Plateau State and the country at large are suffering from poor leadership and the way forward that the PDP should adopt to free the citizens from the syndrome.

In his remarks, Mr. Alex disclosed that, among the objectives of the Symposium are the need to critically assess the problem of leadership and to trace the historical trajectory of how Plateau state and the country at large became failures in leadership.

The Keynote Speaker, Distinguished Prof. Yusufu Turaki, who was introduced by Rev. Ishaya Inuwa, in his keynote remarks said, “Nigeria did not come to be what we have dream of. It lacks patriotism.

“Nigerian Constitution and Statues, exist only on papers, as it does not reflect any of the elements that makes the country. We lack national ethics and ideology.

“Nigeria is more divided than ever. It is a failing state. Its conflicts and violence are caused by forces of indiscipline. Something therefore, needs to be done to bring her back from dissolution. What would bring her back is good leadership and ethics.

“We need to have Visionary and Purposeful Leaders. We therefore, must talk about people, who practice leadership and hold them accountable. Leadership can never be bad but the person in the position of leadership. It is either the outcome of his practice is bad or good”.

NASARAWA STATE ROBBERY: GOVT DEBUNKS EARLIER REPORTS, PUTS RECORD STRAIGHT

Nasarawa State Government has confirmed that, it was the sum of N11. 7 Million that was stolen by armed robbers at the state’s Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning and not N100Million as is erroneously being carried by some Media organizations.

Speaking through the administration’s Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Dogo Shamah, the state government explained that, the robbers trailed the Ministry of Finance Staff, right from Access Bank, where they had gone to cash the money.

He said the robbers succeeded in escaping with the money when they started shooting sporadically on reaching the Ministry of Finance, which compelled everyone close to the scene to scamper for his or her life.

He said the money was meant to host a team from the Revenue, Mobilization,  Allocation and Fiscal Commission which was due to visit the state as well as furnishing and refurbishing of offices and vehicles and not for the payment of casual workers as purported reported in some section of the media.

Mr. Dogo Shammah, however, pointed out that, the incidence has been reported to the  security agencies and investigation has since  commenced.

He called on Media organizations that have so far carried the misleading stories to retract same in the interest of the cordial working relationship that has since prevailed between the state government and Media practitioners in the state.

It would be recalled that within the week, some sections of media organizations went virile with News Reports of armed robbers carted away a whopping sum of N100Million Naira from the state ministry of finance and economic planning.

 

PLATEAU: GOV. LALONG EMBARKS ON MASSIVE REVENUE DRIVE, PAYS GROUND RENT TO FLAG OFF EXERCISE

Weeks after signing the newly passed Revenue Law and Property and Land Use Charge Law, as well as, the Plateau Geographic Information Systems Law, Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State has flagged off a high powered revenue drive with a target to raise the monthly revenue base of the State to about 3 to 5 billion monthly.

The press statement signed by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, dated, 29^th July, 2021, in part stated that, while flagging off the exercise at the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service Headquarters in Jos, the Governor said the revenue drive is aimed at changing the income of the State to pave way for funding more projects and programmes which are hampered currently because of lack of funds.

Lalong who paid the ground rent charges for his personal property, said he decided to lead by example in order to demonstrate to the citizens that nobody is above the law or will be left out in the process.

He said “I am not asking the citizens to do as I SAY, but to do as I DO.  I am not only the Governor, but also Chairman of the Plateau State Revenue Council as stipulated by law. Like the saying goes, leaders lead from the front. Having personally demonstrated this level of civic responsibility as the number one citizen of the State, it means that there is nobody that will default. All of us are subject to the law and those who run against the law will bear the consequences. I therefore expect all citizens particularly political leaders (both elected and appointed) to line up behind me and do same. The time to show leadership has come”.

GOV. LALONG

The Governor said he would not intervene on behalf of any tax defaulter.

In his words, he said, “I plead with every citizen particularly the “big men” to comply because I will not entertain anyone begging me to intervene when the law catches up with you. This is not about me or anyone, but about the law. It is because I do not want to beg anybody or be embarrassed that I am paying my own today”

He explained that, he recently signed into law the Plateau State Revenue (Consolidation) Law; Plateau Property and Land Use Charge Law; Plateau Geographic Information Services Law amongst others aimed at giving legal backing to all revenue generating activities and improving the tax environment.

The Governor however, warned against default as very soon, those wishing to access some services of the Plateau State Government shall be required to show evidence of payment of their taxes.

He said, “This is very important because we cannot enjoy and claim rights and benefits without corresponding responsibility”.

On his part, the Executive Chairman of the PSIRS, Mr. A. Dashe, reaffirmed that the exercise, which involves taxpayer sensitization, awareness creation, on-the-spot inspection of registration licenses and permits, is a continuous one that would be sustained.

He called on all stakeholders to fulfill their civic responsibility of voluntarily paying all taxes, levies, fees and fines to grow the state’s IGR.

According to him, after the period of sensitization and persuasion elapses, the Government shall begin enforcement and whoever fails to comply, would face the law.

After symbolic payment of his ground rent, the Governor and other top government officials paid visits to some business premises to sensitise them and seek their cooperation in the high powered revenue drive. These include First Bank, UBA and Onigbinde Stores all on the Ahmadu Bello Way Terminus.

The organizations assured the Governor that, they would do their best to ensure that, “the revenue drive succeeds”.

BREAKING: PRINCE VALENTINE ADESE, PUBLISHER/CEO, Valreality RADIO, JOINS INDEPENDENT PUBLISHERS ASS. (IPA)

Prince Valentine Adese (JP), the Publisher/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Reality Newspapers, Reality News Online, and Valreality Radio has joined the Independent Publishers Association (IPA).

Prince Adese disclosed stated that, he joined the association because he believes in the association’s vision, leadership, and membership, as they are in tandem with his personal and company’s mission to help enhance Community reporting.

Reacting to this breaking development, the IPA Chairman Mr. Shabul Mazadu, in his remarks said it is a positive development because, Prince Adese is a professional journalist with a wealth of experience in journalism, as well as, “an employer of labour, who has made significant contributions to the advancement of community reporting in Plateau State”.

According to Shabul, Adese has progressed from having a Newspaper outlet/platform, to owning an internet and radio station known as, Valreality Radio/TV, a feat many Plateau Publishers are yet to achieve.

Mazadu went on to say that, “the IPA’s vision is to rescue and launder the already battered image of Community Newspapers by corporate beggars, corruptors, selfish, greedy, and self-centered people posing as Publishers, and to bring up a generation of sound patriotic professional journalists, who would help make a better society”.

Adding that, “it is time to bring in publishers, who will disseminate truth in their reportage without becoming subjective as a result of securing largesse by pledging their conscience”.

Mazadu frowned at the rate at which most Non-IPA members collect advertisements without carrying them on their mediums after collecting payments, as well as, carrying advertisements without the knowledge of their potential customers and sending unsuspecting victims large bills with threats if they do not pay.

The Chairman frowned at the behaviour of some, who attending programs and collecting money without reporting the events both online and in print.

These attitudes, he noted, have tainted the noble profession of Newspaper publishing on the Plateau, but emphasized that, IPA is working hard to rectify the situation and rebrand Community Newspaper Proprietors.

BREAKING: EFCC: SEN. AL-MAKURA DEBUNKS ARREST RUMOUR

Sen. Umaru Tanko Al-Makura has denied claims that, he was arrested by the EFCC, explaining that he was only invited in respect of some petitions against him.

Sen. Al-Makura was reacting to some Media reports that, he was arrested by the EFCC alongside his wife.

Sen. Al-Makura, in an interview with BBC Hausa monitored by this Newspaper on Thursday, said he was invited to give his side of the story concerning some petitions against him.

He disclosed that, he personally reported to EFCC, where he met with the Chairman and some officials of the anti-graft agency for a short period of time.

The Senator, who represents Nasarawa South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, blamed rumour mongers for peddling falsehood, while describing it as baseless.

He explained that, EFCC invited him before the Sallah break, but he informed them that he would appear after Sallah, which they obliged.

He disclosed that, when he met with the EFCC Chairman, he told him that there were petitions against him, adding that, “they wanted to hear from him”.

He said his meeting with the EFCC Chairman did not last for more than 10 minutes.

Almakura said, he also seized the opportunity to discuss with some officials of the agency on the petitions and he gave them all the necessary explanation they desired.

He said, “Far from it, the invitation has nothing to do with my ambition to contest for APC National Chairman. I am a loyal member of the party and I am waiting patiently for the guidelines to officially declare my ambition.

PLATEAU LG ELECTIONS: CAN PLASIEC CHARGE POLITICAL PARTIES, NON-REFUNDABLE FEES AND SET GUIDELINES? PDP ASKS COURT TO DETERMINE

As the Plateau State Government through the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) is preparing to conduct the next coming Local Government (LG) elections to fill the vacant elective positions in the 17 Local Government Councils, the Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dragged PLASIEC to Court over some alleged dissatisfaction in its methodology and fees been charged.

In the suit No. PLD/J249/2021, the PDP is asking the Court to determine whether by the combined reading of the provisions of Section 197(1) and Section 4 part II of the Third Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN), 1999 (As amended) and the entire provisions of Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) Law 2016, particularly, Sections, 8, 9, 10 and 11, PLASIEC (The Defendant) has powers to charge Political Parties and or candidates of political parties a non-refundable fee through the sale of Nomination Forms, and Administrative charges for the conduct of the 2021 Local Government Elections in the Plateau State.

Secondly, whether the combined reading of Section 7(4) of the Constitution of the FRN, and Article13(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, 2004, PLASIEC has the power to stop any person, who is qualified to vote and be voted for from contesting the LG elections in Plateau State, for not paying a Non-Refundable Fee for Nomination Forms and Administrative charges for the conduct of the 2021 LG elections in the state.

Also, in the Originating Summons filed by, E. G. Pawjok (SAN), of Pwajok, Ikowe & Co. of No. 28 Ahamdu Bello Way, Jos, Counsel to the PDP, with S. G. Odey (Esq), leading Mohammed  Nddayako (Esq), S. Oyawole (Esq) and other Four (4) Lawyers, the PDP wants the Court to determine whether, having regard to the provisions of the PLASIEC Law, 2016 and the Constitution of the FRN,  the Defendant (PLASIEC), acted Ultra Vires its powers when it issued paragraphs 2(c)(d) and (e) of the Guidelines for the 2021 LG elections and whether by the provisions of Section 7(4), of the Constitution of the FRN and Article 13(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratified and Enforced) Act, 2004, the Defendant can frustrate the smooth democratic process, which has been copiously guaranteed by the Constitution of the FRN, 1999 (as amended), by charging high fees as Non-refundable fees for Nomination and Administrative charges among others.

As reliefs, is the questions are answered in the negative, PDP on the face of the Originating Summons, is claiming that:-

1. The court should declare that the Defendant has no power under the PLASIEC LAW, 2016, to set down any rules, regulations or guidelines to call on th e Claimant or any political party to make payment(s) to obtain Nomination Forms for the purpose of participation in the 2021 Plateau State Local Government Elections.
2. A declaration that, the Defendant cannot set down any guidelines, rules or regulations demanding for or charging any candidate any amount whatsoever, for the purpose of obtaining Nomination Forms for any charge(s) for the conduct of the 2021 Plateau State LG elections and that, having regard to the provisions of PLASIEC Law, 2016 and the Constitution of the FRN, the Defendant acted Ultra Vires its powers, when it issued paragraphs 2( c, d and e) of the Guidelines for the 2021 LG elections among others.

NASARAWA: ROYAL FATHER CRIES OUT FOR HELP, OVER KILLINGS IN HIS DOMAIN BY KILLER HERDSMEN

A Traditional Ruler in Nasarawa State, the Oriye Barmo in Wanba Local Government Area, Mr. Yakubu Sarki has cried out to the state government to rescue his people from the hands of notorious killer herdsmen, who have prevented his People from going to their farms, as they attacked and kill them at will, while on their farms.

Mr. Yakubu, who made his feelings known, Wednesday, while receiving the State Commissioner of Information, Dogo Shamah, who had gone to console him over the brutal murder of one his kinsman, one Samuel Monday, allegedly killed by suspected Fulani killer herdsmen.

The Royal Father explained that, the 30 years old Samuel was attacked by a Fulani herdsman, whom he said brutalized him to death and took away his motorcycle.

The Oriye Barmo, in his narration, disclosed that, youths later mobilized and arrested the suspect and handed him to the police.

“My people can no longer move freely in the land of their birth as they risk being killed by the herdsmen”. He lamented.

The traditional ruler, who said he had once fallen victim of the herdsmen brutality, called for urgent step to be taken by the State Government to save his people from being chased out of their fathers’ land by these herders.

Responding, Shammah, condemned the act of brutality, while urging the youths and members of the community not to take laws into their hands. Adding that, “they should always report people with questionable characters to constituted authority and allow the law to take its course”.

GOVERNOR LALONG CANVASSES LIGHTING OF MORE RURAL COMMUNITIES, MEETS REA

Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong has advocated for the lighting of more rural communities in the state through the deployment of Solar Mini Grid system.

Governor Lalong, who visited the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja to meet with the Managing Director, Engr. Ahmad Salihijo and his management team, commended the Agency for carrying out the 234 KWp Shemankar solar mini grid that has become a successful venture lighting up communities and improving the lives of the people.

GOV. LALONG DURING THE VISIT

According to a press statement signed by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, dated, 28^th July, 2021, Lalong said his visit to the REA was to “make another passionate appeal for a Solar Mini-Grid Deployment to Ajikamai, the community hosting the newly established Federal Polytechnic N’yak, Shendam LGA of Plateau State”. According to him, as the new Polytechnic takes off, power is a major challenge because, currently, “the area is not connected to the national grid”.

While appealing for urgent intervention, the Governor said, “Specifically, we shall appreciate, if the REA program through the World Bank/Central Bank CARES Initiative can be extended to the newly established Plateau State Energy Corporation as a means to enable the State government’s desire to deliver power to the Polytechnic and surrounding communities through the off-grid energy approach.”

The statement in part also reads: “Lalong said Plateau State energy sector is undergoing reforms with the establishment of the Plateau State Energy Corporation, which is being positioned for synergy and policy implementation.

“He craved the assistance of REA in equipment supply and technical capacity building for the new Corporation.

“The Governor presented other requests to the Managing Director of the REA, urging the agency to partner with the Plateau State Government in expanding NESCO’S power generation capacity both in the existing hydro or exploring other renewable”.

According to the statement, responding, Managing Director REA Engr. Ahmad Salihijo appreciated the Governor for the visit and assured him that the agency will be captured under various programmes that are ongoing.

He cited the interventions that will soon be done in 3 markets in Jos namely: Building Materials, Rukuba Market and Katako. Other initiatives that the State is expected to benefit from are the Solar Power Naija program which has five communities. Others already implemented are the 5KW Health Centres project in five primary healthcare centres in the State under COVID-19.

Salihijo appealed to the Governor to nominate a State focal person that will liaise with the REA in carrying out some of the requests presented to the agency.

PLATEAU: CAN THE YORUBA COMMUNITY IN PLATEAU STATE GET A NEW KING, WITH THE EXISTING CONTROVERSY?

The Yoruba community in Plateau State also known as, “Egbe Omo Yoruba Parapo” has been in a long time controversy REALITY can authoritatively state.

The controversy it is gathered, surrounds the issue of crowning a new King, after the demise their King, late Samuel Olugbodi (Akea Monarch), who reigned until his death in 2019.

It is of note that the Yoruba community Plateau State has Eight (8) Yoruba speaking state, which Includes, Kogi and illorin and facts have it that, they have been living harmoniously together for a long time, as one body and one people.

The President General in the person of, Alhaji Abdul Hakeem Aka, in an interaction with REALITY, felt it is high time they (Yoruba in Plateau State) get a King for the people to lead their way.

REALITY gathered that it was this intention, which made him (Alhaji Abdul) to consult the elders in Council to help in the quest of choosing a King for the community recently.

According to findings, Alhaji Abdul introduced the ‘Election Method, which is perceived to be Democratic to override the former method which is a ‘Selection Method’.

The controversy is born, REALITY gathered, as his opinion is been kicked against because the elders felt it is not right, and not traditional.

THE QUESTION AND SOLUTION REALITY IS TRYING TO GET, IS HOW THE YORUBA PARAPO IN PLATEAU STATE CAN GET A KING FOR ITS PEOPLE.

LG ELECTIONS: PDP vs PLASIEC: MATTER ADJOURNED TO 5TH AUGUST, AS PLASIEC FILES ONLY PRELIMINARY OBJECTION (PO)

The matter between the Plateau State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC),  which came up yesterday has been adjourned to the 5^th of August, 2021, to enable parties prepare for the Preliminary Objection (PO) filed by PLASIEC.

You would recall that, the PDP is challenging the powers of PLASIEC as expressed in rejecting the candidates of the party in the forthcoming Local Government elections in the state and the party is also challenging the Commission for not issuing Nomination forms to the candidates in respect of the said election.

REALITY gathered that, one of the major grounds of the PO filed by PLASIEC challenging the suit filed by the PDP is that, the necessary parties are not before the court, since the candidates of the PDP are not joined.

After a careful submission from, E. D Pwajok SAN  (PDP’S LEAD COUNSEL), the Plateau State High Court, agreed to adjourned the matter to the 5^th of August, when it would take the PO and the substantive matter together.

ENHANCE INDUSTRIAL HARMONY, ACADEMIC STAFF UNION ADVISES NASARAWA STATE GOVT.

The Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, Nasarawa State branch of the Academic Staff Union has made a personate appeal to the state government to commence the immediate payment of salary arrears and other entitlements of staff of the institution to enhance industrial harmony.

The Chairman of the Union, Comrade Sylvester Aku, made the appeal, at a Two-day National Conference of the Union in Lafia, the State capital.

According to the Union leader, lecturers in the polytechnic had for over Ten years, not been given their statutory benefits especially, annual increments of salaries and implementation of promotions among others, which he said has brought about major setbacks for research works and staff productivity.

Comrade Aku, called on the state government to initiate a framework for sustainable development of science and technology where substantial resources would be disbursed to all technical institutions in the state annually as part of steps towards engaging more youths in skills.

Comrade Sylvester Aku, who was speaking on the theme, Nigeria at Cross Roads of Development Technology, Security, Governance, Pandemics and Sustainability, stressed the need for leaders to focus attention to adopting local means of solving problems instead of relying on foreign assistance.

 

NEW CAN LEADERSHIP EMERGES IN NASARAWA STATE

Nasarawa State Chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) today (Tuesday), elected new officials that would pilot its affairs in the next Five (5) years.

Announcing the election results, Chairman Electoral Committee, Mr. Timothy Nasson said, Dr. Sunday Emma, polled 95 votes, to defeat Samson Jugga, who got 36 votes to emerge as the new Chairman of the Association in the state.

The Chairman announced that, based on the CAN’s Constitution, Mr. Jugga, who got the least votes automatically, became the Vice Chairman of the association.

The Chairman also announced other elected officials to include; Alfred Azige Secretary, Femi Momo Assistant Secretary and Samson Osuo a Journalist, bagged the position of Treasurer in that order.

In his acceptance speech on behalf of other officials, the Chairman elect, Dr. Sunday Emma, expressed gratitude to the delegates and indeed the entire Christians for the confidence reposed on them and promised not to disappoint them.

He promised to operate an open door policy where all Christians in the state irrespective of their domination would be carry along.

Dr. Emma said he would work with leaders of other religion in the state to ensure sustainable peace and unity in the interest of the overall development of the state.

He therefore, expressed gratitude to the state government for not interfering in the CAN election unlike the experiences in the past.

PLASU: GOVERNOR LALONG REITERATES HIS PROMISE OF DEVELOPING THE INSTITUTION TO COUNCIL

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has assured the Council of Plateau State University, Bokkos (PLASU) that, his administration would do its best for the institution, hoping that revenues would rise soon to enable the Government attend to other outstanding issues.

According to a Press Statement signed by, Dr. Makut Simon Macham, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, dated, 27th July 2021, the Governor also said he would “continue to lobby and make contacts at the Federal Government and through the private sector for interventions that will facilitate research and teaching in the University”.

GOVERNOR LALONG RECIEVES PLASU GOVERNING COUNCIL, ASSURES OF GREATER ATTENTION TO DEVELOPMENT

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has assured of greater commitment of his administration for the rapid development of the Plateau State University, Bokkos (PLASU).

The Governor, who is the Visitor to the University, gave the reassurance when he received members of the new Governing Council for the University led by the Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman, Monsignor Prof. Ibiora Ike during a courtesy visit to the Government House Rayfield Jos.

Lalong said the University has continued to grow rapidly after his Rescue Administration revived it on assuming office by making various interventions in academic reform and research, infrastructure, administration, staff welfare and higher student population.

The Governor said the Government is aware of the challenges of the Institution and has been doing its best to meet them based on available resources. He said COVID-19 has affected the funds of the State, making it difficult to fulfill all commitments including the demands of ASUU.

He however assured the Council that the Government will do its best for the institution, hoping that revenues will rise soon to enable the Government attend to other outstanding issues. The Governor also said he will continue to lobby and make contacts at the Federal Government and through the private sector for interventions that will facilitate research and teaching in the University.

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman PLASU Council, Monsignor Prof. Obiora Ike appreciated Governor Lalong for appointing him and other members of the Council, assuring that they will do their best to ensure that the University is taken to greater heights.

He said the council had held its inaugural meeting where some of the challenges of the Institution were highlighted. These according to him include staff welfare, more infrastructure, and other amenities to expand the scope of academic progress of the school.

GOVERNOR LALONG CONDOLES, DEPUTY SPEAKER HOUSE OF REPS, HON. IDRIS WASE, OVER THE DEATH OF HIS SISTER.

Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State has visited the residence of the Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, in Jos to commiserate with him over the death of his elder sister, Hajiya Maryam Idris Abdullahi Maikano who died recently.

Avvording to a Plateau State Government Press Statement, signed by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, dated, 26th July 2021, Lalong described late Hajiya Maryam, wife of the late Emir of Wase Alhaji Abdullahi Maikano as a virtous woman, who demonstrated exceptional humility, generosity, kindness and honesty during her lifetime and lived an exemplary lifestyle.

Governor Lalong accompanied by the Secretary to the Government of the State, Prof. Danladi Abok Atu, Chief of Staff Noel Donjur, Head of Service, Engr. Sunday Hyat as well as  Commissioners of Transport, Information and Communication, and Special Duties.

While urging the Deputy Speaker and members of the family to accept her death as the will of God, Governor Lalong said her legacies will remain a point of reference in a very long time.

Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Idris Wase, thanked the Governor for his words of comfort, support and personal visit which affirms his humility, compassion and kindness.

Elder brother to the Deputy Speaker, Retired Justice Yakubu Idris, also welcomed the visit of the Governor, describing it as another gesture that has characterized inclusivity and non discrimination of the Lalong administration.

He urged the Governor to remain firm in his passion for peace and security, which is the basic requirement for development. He said the efforts of Governor Lalong have yielded good results, making Plateau one of the relatively safe states in the country.

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has expressed deep appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board (Amendment) Act, 2021, which amends the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board Act Cap. O10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to provide for the establishment of the Orthopedic Hospital Jos, Plateau State.

Governor Lalong said he received the cheering news of the President’s assent to the amended Act, with excitement and profound gratitude because of the impact it would have not only on people of Plateau State, but other neighbouring States.

The Hospital, which is under the control of the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board, would be affiliated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital to provide specialized orthopedic treatment and medical services.

Lalong also praised the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Idris Wase, for sponsoring the bill and following through with its passage and assent.

He thanked the leadership of the National Assembly, members of the Plateau caucus in the National Assembly and other legislators, who played a great role in supporting the passage of the amended Act.

According to a statement signed by Dr. Makut, his Director of Press, Lalong said, “the establishment of the Orthopedic Hospital Jos, will bring great relief to patients within Plateau State and other surrounding States who for now have to travel far distances to access orthopedic treatment.

The Governor expressed hope that, the Hospital when fully operational would take care of accident victims along the Jos corridor, which is a major transit route linking many States in the North and Central parts of the country.

He assured of the cooperation of the Plateau State Government towards the successful take off and operations of the Orthopedic Hospital.

OUR CONTINGET’S EFFORTS AT EDO 2020 IS WORTH CELEBRATING—GOV. LALONG

Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State has showed praises on the state’s contingent in Edo 2020 Sports Festival. He said their efforts at the games were worth celebrating and remains a source of pride, which reinforces the rich sporting history of Plateau State.

It was a night of jubilation at the Banquet Hall of the New Government House, Little Rayfield, as Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong, hosted the State Contingent to the National Sports Festival, Edo 2020, where he doled out cash gifts to the athletes, who won medals and their coaches.

He said “After intensive competition at the 12-day National Sports Fiesta in Edo State, Plateau contingent took the 13th position and came home with 37 medals, comprising of, 8 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze.

“Although our aim was to emerge top, we are nevertheless are proud of the efforts of our contingents, who gave their best.

“I congratulate the athletes, coaches and other supporting staff for making us proud, as the second best team in the North and the best in the North Central.”

According to a press statement by, Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, “Lalong then showered the athletes and their coaches with, cash gifts by announcing that, “all gold medalists will receive the sum of 1 million Naira each; Silver Medalists 700 Thousand Naira each; and Bronze Medalists 500 Thousand Naira each. Medal winning Coaches will also receive a flat rate of 300 Thousand Naira each; while other athletes will get ‘Thanks for Coming’ to be delivered by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development.”

The Governor said his administration is determined to continue to develop sports particularly by developing grassroots sports, which identifies, and projects future stars.

He directed the Commissioners for Sports, Education as well as Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, to work together in restoring and reinvigorating the various school competitions, community games and other engagements that have huge benefits for talent discovery.

“I want the situation where each year, we should put together our own version of Plateau Sports Festival where we can comprehensively identify, harness and package our sporting talents who can go out to fly the flag of the State. This will be a springboard for their journey to the global stage”. The statement stated.

Commissioner for sports Mr. Victor Lapan praised the Lalong administration, which has continued to pay attention to developing sporting talents particularly at the grassroots through various youth programmes that, discover, groom and showcase hidden potentials. According to him, since assuming office, Governor Lalong has sponsored Plateau sportsmen and women to various Championships and Tournaments which resulted in winning a total of 170 gold; 157 silver; and 170 bronze medals.

Lapan said, the Lalong Rescue Administration has not lonely emphasized prioritization in project implementation, but has also opened its doors to the private sector to continue partnering with Government by sponsoring various sporting events and assisting in developing facilities.

Team Captain, Ifeoma Juliet said, the contingent was overwhelmed by the magnanimity of the Governor, who surprised the athletes with such handsome financial gifts.

She appealed to the Governor to look at other issues of the welfare and logistics of the athletes, assuring that they will do more to deliver more victories to the State.

JUST IN: Nasarawa United, White Wash Sunshine Stars To Remain Second On The NPFL Log

Nasarawa United Football Club of Lafia yesterday white washed Sunshine Stars FC of Akure by 4-0 at the Lafia Township Stadium.

The match being a Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) Match day 35 fixture saw the Nasarawa Lads crushing their visitors with four un-replied goals to remain second on the league table.

All the four goals were scored in the first half of the game.

Both teams are scheduled to meet twice within the week with Nasarawa United already drawing the first pound of the flesh on the Akure boys awaiting when they will clash again in the 2021 Aiteo Cup semi finals.

The Aiteo Cup Semi Finals will be played on the 30^th of July, 2021 in Asaba, Delta State and this win against same opponents will serve as a morale booster for the Solid Miners.

Silas Nwankwo opened scores for the home team with a fine shot into the left corner of the post in the 11th minute and in the 18th minute secured his brace after the Sunshine goalkeeper, mistakenly parried the ball towards him, in an attempt to pass the ball to his  team mate.

In the 23rd minute of play Nwankwo provided an assist when he gave what could best be described as a banana shot from the left flank  of the Sunshine Stars defence area into their penalty area that found Aliyu Abdullahi who was well positioned and simply tapped in from close range for goal number three.

The Nasarawa fans were thrown into jubilation and festive mood when Chigozi Obasi freekick outside the 18 yard box in the 39th minute beat Sunshine Stars goalkeeper, Henry Ayodele, to make it 4-0 till the end of the first half.

On resumption of the second half the Nasarawa boys fought tooth and nail to increase the tally but to no avail up till the blast of the fianl whistle.

Head Coach of Nasarawa United Bala Nikyu lamented that his team missed so many chances in the second half, after their classical performance in the first half that gave them the 4-0 margin.

The coach was full of praises to his boys over what he described as their exceptional performance with a promise to ensure that the team maintains the fit in their subsequent matches.

On his part, Head Coach of Sunshine Stars, Deji Ayeni, blamed fatigue for the poor performance of his boys and promised that they will bounce back and give a better performance in the Aiteo Cup semi finals on July 30th.

He said there is the likelihood that it might get to a stage that when you push the players psychologically and mentally, they are going to be down and you cannot get the best from them and was gracious in defeat as he congratulated Nasarawa United for the victory.

He claimed that Nasarawa United got their motivation from their home fans, however he said he gave the victory to them.

A PRINCIPAL SUSPECT OF THE KILLERS OF THE BROTHER OF SEN. GABRIEL SUSWAM, ARRESTED IN NASARAWA

Nasarawa state Police Command has disclosed that, it has arrested one of the principal suspect of the killerS of the brother of Senator Gabriel Suswam, late Terkula Suswam.

The State Commissioner of police,  Mr. Bola Longe, disclosed this in Lafia the state capital over the weekend.

He said the police acting on a tip off, got the information that, a group of assassins had concluded plans to strike at some locations within, Karu LGA axis, with the full aim of eliminating their victims in the process.

He said that, his men conducted a thorough search of the suspects’ hide- out and recovered, Two Berreta Pistol and Three Volkswagen Golf cars, which they admitted were bought from the proceeds of their criminal activities and being used for their nefarious activities.

He said thorough investigation has shown that, one of the suspects named, Saalumun Waako, is a member of the criminal gang responsible for the gruesome murder of one late Terkula Suswam, an elder brother to Senator Gabriel Suswam, on March 2nd 2021 at Ayin village, Logo LGA of Benue State.

He said the suspect, Saalumun Waako has also been on the wanted list of Benue Police Command for offences ranging from kidnapping, homicide, to armed robbery. Adding that, he has been handed over to Benue State Police Command for further investigation.

The police Boss further disclosed that, the gang intended carrying out its operation around Uke, Nyanya Gwandara areas and along Keffi-Abuja express road.

He announced that, “they were all arrested on 2^nd July, 2021, at about 1930hrs, when a vehicle conveying them trailed and blocked at a spot along Keffi- Abuja road”.

He warned people with questionable character to leave the state as according to, they would have no hiding place.

NASARAWA: POLICE NABS 7 COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY SYNDICATES, FAKE VICE CHANCELLOR

Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a seven-member syndicate in Lafia with N7.8million and 110,000 dollars counterfeit currencies.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bola Longe, who paraded the suspects on Friday at the Police Command Headquarters in Lafia, alongside 61 others for various criminal offences announced that, two of the  suspects were arrested on 4^th June, 2021, while attempting to pay some money into an account, using Point of Sale (PoS) located around the College of Agriculture in Lafia.

The Police Commissioner explained that, a student of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and one other person went to deposit N50,000.00 at the POS when the agent discovered some of the notes were fake.

Mr. Longe said that, the suspect insisted that, she (POS) operator must accept the money, which resulted in an altercation, which compelled her to seek police intervention.

He said his personnel attached to Area Command, Lafia moved immediately to the scene on receipt of the complaint and arrested the suspect.

The police Boss explained that, further investigation led to the arrest of five more suspects, while N7.8 million counterfeit currency in 1,000 denomination, and 110,000 dollars counterfeit notes in 100 dollars bills were recovered from the suspects.

Mr. Longe said so far the counterfeit currencies recovered had been taken to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), while investigation continues.

The Police commissioner further announced that, the command has also arrested a 39-year-old man, who posed as, Vice Chancellor and acting Registrar of the Federal University of Lafia, on social media to defraud unsuspecting admission seekers and contractors.

He said the suspect was arrested in Bukan-Sidi Lafia, during an operation by his men on 24^th June, 2021.

The Police Commissioner disclosed that, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who claimed to be a lecturer at the Benue State University, Makurdi, on sabbatical leave, was discovered to be a secondary school dropout with no means of livelihood.

He explained that, other criminal suspects arrested within the last two months are thirty for cultism, eight for armed robbery, five for kidnapping and two for railway track vandalism.

All the suspects, according to the Police, would be prosecuted, as soon as, investigations were over.

He appealed to the public to continue to collaboration with the police through useful information in its bid  to rid the state and by extension the country of criminal elements.

AHEAD OF NASARAW STATE LGA ELECTIONS: APC ALREADY SCREENED 80 ASPIRANTS

As Nasarawa State Local Government elections draw nearer, the All Pprogressives Congress (APC) Screening Committee has so far screened about Eighty (80) Aspirants in the  Thirteen (13) Local Governments Areas of the State.

It was reliably gathered that, a total number of about Eighty one (81) Aspirants, purchased Nomination Forms out of which eighty of them have appeared for the screening.

The Chairman of the Screening Committee, Mr. Philip Dada, told our political correspondent in an exclusive interview that, Doma Local Government has nineteen aspirants with a female aspirant, adding that, “out of the number, only ten presented themselves for screening”.

Mr. Dada, who is also the State Commissioner for Works also disclosed that, Keffi and Akwanga Local Government Areas have a total number of eight candidates each for chairmanship position. Adding that, Nasarawa Eggon and Lafia Local Governments have seven aspirants each.

Other Local Government Areas according to the Chairman of the Screening Committee included, Karu, six Aspirants, Keana and Awe have Five (5) aspirants each, while Nasarawa Local Government and Wamba have Four (4) Aspirants in that order.

He said out of the Five (5) aspirants from Toto Local Government, Four showed up for screening, while one person absented himself.

Mr. Dada further announced that, the only Local Government with a consensus chairmanship candidate is Obi.

He said the two females contestants are from Doma and Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Areas of the state.

He praised all those that indicated their interest in aspiring for the various positions in the Councils, showing a high sense of decorum, as he urged them to continue with such spirit of maturity even during and after the election.

HE IS A SCHOLAR OF REPUTE AND RESOURCEFUL ADMINISTRATOR. GOV LALONG SPEAKS OF FORMER VC UNIJOS, PROF. MAIMAKO

Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong has described the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Seddi Sebastian Maimako as a scholar of repute and resourceful administrator, whose tenure ushered in a great era of academic and infrastructural achievements for the institution.

According to a press statement signed by Dr. Makut, the Director of Press to Governor Lalong, the Governor, who was among thousands of guests that joined the former Vice Chancellor for the Thanksgiving Mass, at the St. Mary Catholic Church, Lu’ukwo, Bakin Chiyawa, Quan-pan LGA of Plateau State said, Prof. Maimako left a legacy of excellence, hardwork, inclusivity, and progressive leadership in the University of Jos.

He said, under Prof. Maimako’s leadership as the 9^th Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, so much was achieved in research, teaching, Infrastructural development, campus harmony and breakthroughs in academic grants.

Lalong said, the testimony of both staff, students, regulatory bodies and many, who had contact with the institution during his stewardship affirm the fact that he was prudent, transparent, fair, kind and just to all manner of people, which enabled him propel the institution to the pedestal of greatness it has been placed today.

The Governor said this has brought pride to the Government and people of Plateau State and demonstrates the capacity of the citizens of the State to hold higher responsibilities and discharge them diligently.  He wished the Vice Chancellor more years of higher service to the nation and humanity.

In a homily, Rev. Fr. Gabriel Gowok, citing Bible references from 2 Kings 4:42-44; John 6:1-15; among others said, Christians are supposed to be concerned about what name they acquire in every responsibility they are given rather than acquiring wealth that does not last.

Fr. Gowok however, acknowledged the testimony of Prof. Maimako, whom he said has been variously described as a humble, professional and honest administrator that carried people along and preferred to leave behind a good name rather than riches.

Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Rev. Dr. Matthew Ishaya Audu said God gives people assignments as a way of attracting their diligence and productivity. He commended the former Vice Chancellor for returning to thank God for his tenure, an attribute that is encouraged in the Bible and obeyed by those who fear God and acknowledge his love for them.

Prof. Maimako in a remark expressed gratitude to God for lifting him up from a humble background and entrusting him with a huge responsibility such as the leadership of one of the prominent Federal Universities in Nigeria.

He thanked both, the Management, staff and students of the University of Jos, for supporting and challenging him to give his best in the last five years. Maimako also expressed deep appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Lalong, Minister of Education, among others for backing him throughout his tenure.

Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Gray Ejikeme, described the era of Prof. Maimako as very productive and inspiring, with tangible academic and physical development results that have made teaching and research easier.

 

CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR NIGERIA. GOV LALONG CHARGES CATHOLIC WOMEN ORGANISATION OF NIGERIA (CWON), AS THEY COMMEND HIS ADMINISTRATION

Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State has urged Catholic Women Organization of Nigeria (CWON), who visited him recently, to continue to pray for Nigeria and the leadership, as well as, followership for God to grant them wisdom and ability to resolve the current challenges in the nation.

The Governor gave this charge, when Lady Rose Agur, led the Executive Committee of the body to Government House Rayfield Jos, to pay a courtesy visit to the Governor and present to him the new President of CWON, Dame Mary Assipi Gonsun.

Governor Lalong, who was delighted with the honour of the visit by CWON, which is the umbrella body of women in the Catholic Church said, “The intercession of women, particularly CWON, was very useful in encouraging “Government serve the people with honesty, vigour and commitment”.

According to a press statement narrating the event, signed by, Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, dated, 23^rd July, 2021, Governor Lalong also asked them to pray for the rescue of people in captivity and for the defeat of evil persons that have terrorized the country.

Earlier, The Catholic Women Organization of Nigeria (CWON) had commended Governor Simon Bako Lalong for his inclusive leadership style that has promoted peace and greater harmony in the State and nation at large.

CWON Secretary Board of Trustees, Lady Rose Agur, appreciated the Governor for his disposition to reach out to people across religious, denominational and social groups.

“She also appreciated the donation of a bus to CWON and other forms of support that have facilitated the work of evangelism”. The statement stated.

Adding that, “She also told the Governor that, the National Executive Committee was in Jos for its Retreat and Executive Meeting”.

NASARAWA: GIDAN SULE VILLAGE ATTACKS: 5 KILLED, 3 INJURED, POLICE PROMISES TO ARREST PERPETRATORS

The Nasarawa State Police Command Thursday announced the killing of Five villagers in Gidan Sule Village in Keana Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

The Police made this disclosure in a Press Statement issued in Lafia signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP. Ramhan Nansel.

The PPRO in the statement explained that, “On 21^st July, 2021, at about 23.00 hrs, the command received an information that, unknown gunmen, while shooting sporadically, attacked a particular compound at Gidan Sule Village along Lafia- Makurdi Road”.

The Police image maker further explained that, upon receipt of the information, a detachment of Police personnel, comprising of the Police Mobile Force, the Counter Terrorism Unit, vigilante and hunters, with support from the military repelled the attackers.

ASP Nansel, stated that, four (4) corpses were recovered at the scene, while three injured victims were rescued and rushed to Odumu Hospital for medical attention. One person however, later died, while receiving treatment at the Hospital.

He said the State Commissioner of Police, Bola Longe has deployed additional Policemen being led by the Area Commander Awe, ACP, Dankwano D. Wilson, to go after the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

 

The Commissioner of Police has also sent condolences to the families of the deceased, while assuring them that the Police command is doing everything humanly possible to arrest and bring the perpetrators of the act to face the Law.

The Police Boss according to the statement has assured the general public of the “Police commitment in fighting every form of criminality in the state”.

He also called on members of the public to always assist the police with useful information to enable the Police and other agencies bring an end to the ongoing senseless killings in the state.

Eid-El-Kabir: GOV. LALONG ADMONISHES MUSLIMS TO EMBRACE THE LESSIONS OF THE EXERCISE AND WORK FOR A BETTER SOCIETY

As Muslims in Plateau State join other faithful across the world to mark Eid-el-Kabir, Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has expressed warm felicitations and admonished them to embrace the lessons of the exercise and work for a better society.

In a press statement signed by Dr. Simon Makut, the Director of Press to the Governor, Lalong particularly described the growing spirit of tolerance and religious harmony in Plateau State as a welcome development which he said was enhancing confidence and improving the economy.

He said the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir presents another opportunity for the Muslim community to reach out to indigent members of society and people of other faiths by extending the blessings of the moment.

On security, the Governor expressed happiness that religiously-motivated insecurity has been largely tackled in Plateau State, saying attention now is on criminality that borders on vices such as banditry, kidnapping, destruction of crops and livestock as well as attacks on innocent citizens.

This he said the Government is fighting with all its might to overcome as it has recently procured 200 security motorcycles and 50 patrol vans to boost the capacity of security agencies to deal with crimes in all parts of the State.

The Governor also commended security agencies for working round the clock to secure the State before, during and after the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.
