The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has commended Kano State Government for the official launch of Sexual Offenders Database (SOD) in the state.
This, according to the State Government is a move to tackle the increasing cases of Sexual Offenses in the state and where Sexual Offenders would be named and shamed.
It is of note that, the Database, which was launched by the State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Nura Sagir Umar is aimed at curbing the menace of Sexual Offences by exposing the information about the sexual offense, name, photo, number of times sexual offenders commit the crime, date, place, convicted, reported, and arraigned cases.
The Center in a statement signed by its Gender Project Officer, Zainab Aminu, has described the development as a welcome idea as it would help curtail the menace of SGBV.
She explained that, “The database is aimed at keeping records of all sexual offenders within the state in a register and will be available online for download by anyone and also in official gazette to be shared to rural areas. This hopefully, will deter perpetrators knowing they could be named and shamed anywhere in the society.
“Results from our monitoring have shown an increasing rate of incidence of various forms of Gender Violence in the state. For years, Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has been advocating for measures to curb this problem.
“The launching of the Sexual Offenders Database (SOD) by the State Government is a well deserved development.
“CITAD applauds the Government for this strategic move in the fight against GBV in the state. We believe that the SOD will help in curtailing the menace and pave way for a society free from Gender-Based Violence.”
The Center also recommends that, the State Government should implement more measures to compliment the previous efforts of the fight against Gender Based Violence in the state.
“Such as the establishment a gender abuse monitoring unit in the Ministry of Education, establishment of special courts for trying perpetrators of gender-based violence”. She stated.
She however, urged school authorities to constitute team of observers to monitor and report GBV cases.
