EDITORIAL: WHY MEDIA HOUSES, PRACTITIONERS, SHOULD IGNORE FACELESS PRESS STATEMENTS AND PRESS RELEASES IN PLATEAU

It is a fact that the history of the media cannot ignore the role Post Offices played by publishing letters written through them.

It is also in Media Practice that Press Statements and Press Releases like the Post Office's purpose of publishing abandoned letters operate in different capacities and relevance.

While the Press Statement is to enable society or a particular State, Community or Group to understand an issue(s) and the position taken by the writers or authors on it, the Press Release is to alert the public of a new or strange development.

It therefore follows that anybody using these instruments to reach out to the general public with their opinion, must have the capacity of being identified and sued when need be.

For these capacities to exist, the person or organization must be traceable, and formally registered with an identifiable umbrella ad if it is just a Movement, the signatory must be identifiable, and with their name and the capacity they hold on behalf of the Movement.

This therefore fundamentally calls on Media Practitioners and Media Houses, especially those operating in Plateau State, to ignore any Press Statement or Press Release that is not signed by any identifiable person or those representing Artificial Personalities.

In recent times in Plateau State, it is observed that Press Releases/Statements are just been sent to Media House, especially allegedly accusing the Administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang (Esq) of one wrong or the other, but their authors simply shy away from responsibility or Right of Reply.

These Authors also do not deem it fit that while they shy away from responsibility for the weight of their accusation(s), the Media House(s)/Journalist(s) that would make their views or opinion public are indemnified.

So many Journalist(s)/Media Houses have suffered the penalties of litigations arising from these faceless Press Releases and Press Statements.

JUST BE AWARE!
