A bill for a law to prohibit and abolish open and normadic cattle, and other livestock grazing rearing has been read for the second time at the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Majority leader and member representing Awka south 1 constituency, Hon Nnamdi G Okafor who moved the motion recalled months ago when the 17 southern governors of Nigeria meet and came up with a resolution demanding the southern states to pass these bill.
While making his submissions, Okafor emphasized on the importance of the bill stating that it’s a law whose time has come.
“Recently, the southern governors meet again in Enugu and re-affirmed that position. Many villages in Anambra have witnessed clashes between headers and farmers which has resulted to killings, reaping and destruction of properties. He lamented
Other lawmakers in there submissions Frowned at the rate Anambra state has suffered because of the absence of this bill. According to them, the passage of these bill will make Ndi-Anambra sleep with their two eyes closed.
“No mudern society still practice open grazing. The cattle are messing up our streets. They constitute security hazards, moving around with AK-47. We stand to benefit more if this bill is passed.
“It is not just to pass this bill, but also implement it. This is SOS (Save Our Soul) Bill.
Anambra state speaker Uche Okafor said the bill will be forwarded to the house committee on agriculture headed by it’s chairman John Nwaokoye, the member representing Awka North Constituency. The committees were charged to go back and do the normal surgical legislative work after which a public hearing will be held with Stakeholders.
