Niri Darong (Esq) a renowned Legal Practitioner in Plateau State has described as very sad the situation in Nigeria today, where the citizens cannot live their full lives and where complaints against human rights and abuses are piling up daily against Security Agencies.
He said Nigerians have lost those days when water was flowing in taps and there was no need for generators to provide power or electricity.
While assessing the developments in the country, Niri (Esq) said, “The State of the Nation can be capture simply with what happened to our Diplomat in Indonesia. It shows how people look at us as Nigerians now and how they now treat not only ordinary Nigerians badly, but Diplomats from this country. It has shown that, we have gone down below where we should be in the eyes of the world”.
He lamented over the ongoing attacks in several communities especially, on the people of Jebu Maingo in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State. According to him, “the attacks are unfortunate and very sad!”
Niri (Esq), who spoke during an interaction with REALITY and some other Journalists today, who paid him a visit in his office in Jos, the Plateau Sate capital in part said, “The State of the Nation can be capture simply with what happened to our Diplomat in Indonesia. It shows how people look at us as Nigerians now and how they now treat not only ordinary Nigerians badly, but Diplomats from this country. It has shown that, we have gone down below where we should be in the eyes of the world.
“On the part of our security agencies right now, they live much to be desired in the way they interact with citizens.
“I don’t think we have had such situation, where human rights violations and complaints are been filed against security agencies in any time in our history like now. Not even during Military Rule or Civil War, where rights of individuals are supposed to give way to security.
“Nigerians were never harassed or locked up in detention as we have it today!
“The Chairman of NBA, Markurdi in Benue State, was recently beaten by agents of Economic abd Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and from his statement on what transpired, he said the EFCC Chairman went to Markurdi and instead of apologizing; he was still defending his staff. Claiming that, there is nothing he can do about it and that he has a very good relationship with the Judges. It seems as if the Judges belong to only him, but he should know that we Lawyers have good relationship with the Nigerian judges too and this is because we work in Courts and are staff and officers of the Court. The EFCC Boss was actually bragging about his claim. I am sure he thinks that people would be afraid of him concerning his claim.
“It is so sad! And if you look at it, what the security agencies are doing and having disregard for Nigerians is why you see foreigners treating Nigerians with disdain.
“Look at the killings in all over the country, is that not worrisome enough?
“When we were children, any killing or one person killed, is usually a Breaking New, but today, it is no longer breaking news. You read and hear of killings in this country on day to day basis!
“Miango in Bassa Local Government Area shares bounder with 3 Div Barracks in Plateau State, but even yesterday, the 10th of August, 2021, two women were killed at Jebu Maingo. If Maingo cannot be safe, the question is, where would be safe? We really need to look inwards for this solution.
“I was discussing with an elder statesman recently. He joined one of the Para-military organizations in 1968 and he disclosed to me that, he was one among others that were fully trained, given manuals during their training sessions. In fact in 1968, he was given every Law as a recruit and after the training with his paramilitary organization, he was still sent to the Police College for a Six-Month training in addition.
“But what d we have today in the country? Our security agents are not even trained at all, talk less of receiving a retraining! You see a police officer who is supposed to be very vast cannot even take the statement of an accused person. This is really sad!
“If it happens to a police officer then, how about the Military whose job is just to shot? They would not be able to know the rules of engagement. And that is why we keep on having accidental discharges here and there.
“Look at Abuja, a learnt they want to start collecting taxes from those using generators and those who drilled boreholes. Sad!
“When I was a child, we had no need for generator as power was everywhere. When I was a child, we used to play with tap water and even take bath there. This was because it was flowing everywhere. But today, Government has not provided for all these services. Yet they are planning to tax people for helping themselves to provide for these services.
“I think those in leadership positions and in government are taking Nigerians for granted! They are pushing Nigerians to the wall. I pray then don’t see their reaction! To be sincere what they would witness is better imagined because the ENDsars protest would be a joke!”
