Governor Simon Bako lalong of Plateau State has reiterate the determination of the State Government to consolidate on the measures taken so far to promote enduring peace and security in the state, while also working in synergy with other states to foster national peace and security.
The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sunni Tyoden, gave this assurance in his keynote address, during the opening ceremony of the 3-day conference on Culture, Peace and National Security organized by the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today, Tuesday, 10TH August, 2021, at Crest Hotel in Plateau State.
Governor Lalong said, “We are as concerned as Mr. President of the socio-political and economic implications of a long and sustained period of insecurity in Nigeria. As a Government, we are mindful of the fact that no government can meet the yearnings and aspirations of its people in an atmosphere of chaos and insecurity. We have taken steps to enlighten our people to tolerate one another by focusing more on the things that unite us rather than those that divide us”.
Speaking on forgiveness, Governor Lalong disclosed that, “I am pleased to inform you that one of the measures the state government has taken is to institute a FORGIVENESS DAY as a platform to sensitize our people to sink their differences and embrace peace which is a sine qua non for the growth and development of the state. This strategy can be replicated nationwide. There is no gain saying the fact that if the present state of insecurity in our nation is to be successfully addressed, concerted efforts of all and sundry is required. One of the management strategies would be mass education and sustained continuous enlightenment on the importance of peaceful coexistence, patriotism, and security to national development. It will also be instructive to educate the citizenry on the negative consequences of insecurity”.
Earlier, Alhaji, Lai Mohammed, the Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, while welcoming participants and the guest to the Conference said, “In order to reverse the present state of insecurity in Nigeria, all hands must be on deck. The collective efforts of government at all levels in conjunction with the traditional institutions, religious bodies, civil society groups and the family are urgently required to overcome the monster of insecurity in Nigeria. While government through the security agencies play a leading role, it is the responsibility of the citizens to cooperate with the security agencies by providing useful information at their disposal.
The Minister, who took time to reassure Nigerians that the Federal Government is leaving no stone upturned with respect to the state of insecurity in the country said, “It is gratifying to reassure Nigerians that the administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) is committed to ensuring that no stone is left unturned to end insecurity in Nigeria. He has promised to use everything within his constitutional powers to end insecurity in Nigeria and bring the criminals and their sponsors to justice. Mr President will keep his word”.
